I was delighted to come accross this web page. I am already in contact with couple of my old boarder/class mates. I am living in Canada now and would love to hear from anyone who remembers a tall gangly guy who had an unfortunate surname... which meant lot of teasing...tubs, tubbers, enamel ...etc etc
If any of the boarders remember me drop me a line anytime. Also, if anyone needs some guidance travelling to Alberta I am your man.
Great job on this site Jim.
Well done.
welcome. Were you a boarder?

I was a boarder, I cannot remember the house name. We were down the road from Wyke Lodge..... We have Mr Smith and Mr Hurst as our Housemasters!
ReplyDeleteHi Steve, I was a boarder at Kelso House from 71 to 74/5 and left in 76. I was intrigued by your other messages regarding Jean and Bundles. Are you still in touch with her? Dave
ReplyDeleteYou will remember that Mr Smith was otherwise known as Biffer and Mr Hirst was Brick.
ReplyDeleteHi Dave We must have crossed paths I am sure? Jean moved home to Liverpool to look after dad, I lost contact after that. But that sure was one nice lady, we were lucky. Now with Brick, I am afraid I cant say the same, he sacred the crap out of me. As did a Mr Amos in history and Boggers in French. Those were the days eh?
ReplyDeleteHi Dave Bruce Brassington here. Also ex Kelso and under the wing of Biffa & Brick. Biffa so called because of his wierd deep voiced biffing noise exuded during classes as he taught facing the board pipe in mouth causing anything uttered to be totally unintelligable, mind you his hand writing was even worse? I can't quite place you but we must have been there around the same time. Do you remember the marathon board games that used to go on in the common room? What was it Campaign? Regards Bruce
ReplyDeleteHi Bruce, The game was Risk if I remember. Did we also play Bridge too and Black Maria (which we referred to by a far cruder term)? Table tennis too in the TV room. We rushed from prep on Thursday's to get a good seat to watch Tomorrow's World with Raymond Baxter followed by Top of The Pops. Was there not also an annual sketch night where each Year/dormitory did various things like impersonnating Marc Bolan doing Hot Love, etc. I spent a lot of time in the Common Room doing puishments in the form of 4 side essays on given out by prefects (Manchester Utd, the combustion engine, the inside of a ping-pong ball). I remember a Bruce but memory is rusty. You had black hair? Dave

ReplyDeleteHi Dave Yes it was black then (mostly grey now). So Risk was the game, eh? Regarding the TV room rush on Thursday night (Wasn't Dr Who on as well), you'll probably remember the chair tipping procedure where the front row seats where ousted of juniors to make room for more senior members. And the prcarious act of loading 3 or 4 chairs onto a large table to get grandstand seats? Rgds Bruce

ReplyDeletePermission to join this discussion please. I was also at Kelso & Barton Seagrave (73-77) and the previous posts certainly bring back the memories. As I was a couple of years above most of you, you probably have less fond memories of me as I seem to remember that obnoxious behaviour to ones juniors was a way of life. It's certainly stood me in good stead as I'm a Detective Superintendent in the Metropolitan Police now - only joking - about the bhvr, not the job!! I'm in touch with Nick Barker who went in to the Navy & has stayed there (currently in Oman). I also had recent contact with Dave MacDonnell who left Symonds after O levels - another Police Superintendent!! I married Joady Small who I went out with for most of the 6th form - we split up for a few years at 18 until seeing the error of our ways. 20th wedding anniversary next year. Her parents still live in Winchester and play bridge with Mr & Mrs Parry-Jones who took over from Biffer. I recall teaching their young children to say four letter words to their parents at breakfast. Martin Mitchell
