Courtney's Journal

I just came across this: 'Vox Clamantis In Deserto', a whole book on the Web, by Paul Courtnage ('Courtney'), who was at PS from the late 60s. This period is covered in Chapter 2, http://www.projectoceanvision.com/vox-02.htm

Very interesting. Was Cooksie really called Silas?  Paul is one of the vast majority who hated him.

If you like Phantoms and Tornados and stuff, you'll like reading about his RAF career.

There's supposed to be a video of PS made in 2010, accessed via a button on that page, but I can't make it work.

I've invited Paul to join this group.

  1. Enjoyed the section on PS and most was much as I remember. I vaguely remenber Cooksie but had very little to do with him. My period at PS was from `49 to `68.

  2. A good read. I spotted the odd inaccuracy in the PSS history and some serious embellishment to the story of the Pupil Revolt of 1956. I believe that it was at a grammar school in Southampton at around that time where occurred the incident of pupils marauding with the school's small arms. I heard that it was only the masters' cars that were wounded in the assault, but perhaps someone could tell us the full story?

  4. Yes, Pip, the story of the revolt has rather grown in the telling, hasn't it? The story was retold in ?the Times? a few years back, but my note to it is lost somewhere in my digital memory. It happened in my 2nd year at PS, but I remember nothing about it. But we could have had a tsunami and, my memory being what it is, I probably wouldn't recall it.

  5. Hello, Gents. I'm the one responsible for Vox; Chris asked me to look you up. Very fair comments about the odd inaccuracy and embellishment - a plate of food tastes so much better with a little seasoning! Anyway, I didn't write it under oath. Thanks for your comments and I'm looking forward to exploring this group; it looks very interesting.

  6. Hello, Gents. I'm Courtney, the one responsible for 'Vox'. Chris kindly invited me to look you up - so here I am. PS from about 1969 to 1976. Thanks for your comments - I fully take your points about embellishment and inaccuracy. All I can say is that a meal always tastes better with a little seasoning and I'm not writing Vox under oath! :-)

Now you mention it, Chris, I think I got some of the detail of the revolt (a piece of school mythology in my time there) from The Times some years ago. There is a useful, short history in Weeke Local History, although nothing about the revolt.

Anyway, this looks like a very interesting group, which I'm looking forward to exploring. I may have some more yarns for you in time. Thank you for inviting me here.

    Regards,

    Courtney
