Repertory Company visit
Does anybody remember the performance in the hall by a visiting repertory company, probably 1952?
hi Churchie, now this memory is really faint. There was a performance of Pygmalion about that time wasn't there? I don't remember it being repertory though. I do remember that there was an awful amount of giggling over the use of the word 'bloody' best regards, jim wishart
I wasn't around in the 1950's but circa 1969 a repertory company visited the school. Mr Ashurst read the announcement that we'd all find the performance "somewhat entertaining" and then we all marched into Varley Hall for the performance - light operetta, I can't remember what it was. I was "volunteered" to operate the curtain, which I thought was totally demeaning until during the performance the attractive female actress disrobed down to a tiny bikini about two feet from my schoolboy eyes. (If anyone noticed the curtains shaking at that point, now you know why). That's all I can remember about the whole afternoon. If anyone can fill in any more details I'd be glad to hear about them!
Repertory company visit - circa 1952/3 Yes I remember the visit. They did Romeo and Juliet, Juliet was (as I remember) absolutely gorgeous. It was some years later when I saw it again that I actually followed the plot.
Saville is right about Juliet. There was an issue about whether I should be allowed to attend since I hadn't paid (sixpence), but in the end the point was conceded so long as I stacked chairs afterwards. The chairs were to be placed in Kirby which was also the changing room. I was however too embarrassed to enjoy what I saw - although she was quite comfortable with it I remember. This of course added to my confusion as she obviously viewed me as far too young to be any kind of threat.
