Reunion

Hi Chaps,
I've been hearing about these websites for some time and have finally got round to having a look. I am so pleased I did 'cos we are coming out of the woodwork now! I had an indirect call a week ago from a classmate, Ali Walker. Hadn't seen hide nor hair of him for 30 years and damn me if the following Friday there were about 15 of us in the pub again, laughing our socks off! Now I've found this website too and half the photos are of my other pals.
Well, look, I'd love to go on and on but suffice it to say I have a number of team photos from the 60s and am happy to share them with you. I noticed Roger Ault on the recent Athletics photo, I was in the pub with him last night! We were talking about those same guys in the photo: Jim Gove, Rich Player, Tony Steele...........and Badminton, my Housemaster, The amazing Mr Renton, Ted Milam, Elliot ( I'll have to recite my seniority list to remember which of the brothers)..........
Please contact me and tell me how to proceed.
Regards to you all.
Bill Berridge

  5. Mr Adams and Mr Berridge g'day form Perth -Oz.
I just happened to be idlly 'surfin' one wet and windy night and through a happy co-incidence ended up here.
Amused to see the series of team photos - I confess to having similar photos stashed away somewhere - but mostly of shool hockey teams of the late 60's.

So any news of those who escaped from Whyke Lodge in 1971. I have always been curious what happened to Bob and James Elliot, Andrew Dennison and Nick Brenton - they dont appear on the official P/S email list.

I still keep in touch with Phil (Jock) Parry from Kelso but thats about it altough last time I was back in Pom land I did venture out to Winchester and had a quiet wander around the school grounds - it felt very odd!

    Cheers Mark Stupart

  7. I was at Wyke Lodge from Sept '73 onwards (would have been in the 2nd year then) so I guess Adams was one of those names in the dreaded seniority list that we all had to learn.

  8. Bill,   If you are the Bill "I've got no toe nails" Berridge, who was great friends with Pete Hilling and Pete Williams; then the Internet has indeed proved to be my God  and I am in heaven. If not please ignore this post!!!.   PS I am meeting up with Pete Williams at the Saints v Blackburn game . If you are who I think you are please tell me and I will get you a ticket too.   Regards     Dave

  9. I must have been there when you were.
I had the luxury of Polishing Adams shoes, which wasn't that bad, because I always had tuc money, and he always paid, unlike some of the others that were always short... after the pub.
I was part of the crew that dug up the floorboards to hide 'the empties' it also kept the full beers nice and cool. In hindsight it must have stunk like a brewery, since the empties were never rinsed. Mrs. Renton had a bird.

  10. "I was part of the crew that dug up the floorboards to hide 'the empties' "     We started it....... in the corner of the dining room......it was where all the infamous, disgusting Wyke Lodge sausages went.

  11. Strange but sometimes i get a craving for those sausages, that and British Rail meat pies.

  12. Yes "Joyce" did have a bird (a weiro) that used to fly around and shit all over their study - until the fatefull day that 'Slime' Cooksie's cat got it - leaving a trail of feathers across the Wyke Lodge lawn all the way down to the green oval fish pond in the corner.

And don't forget her Siamese cat that used to sound like a crying baby at all hours of the night.

So what ever happened to the "Fallen Angles" - Andrew 'Ringo' Renton's band (practise sessions in the cellar) - later known as "Reign" and their one and only record getting thoroughly 'bagged' by Tony Blackburn.

  13. The joys of Millers sausage rolls in crinkly transparent plastic wrappers with blue writing IIRC - it all comes flooding back

  14. "Practice in the Cellar" - Oh yes, I remember those....  never copuld understand why we'd get Zeke fir talkin after lights out and all the while boom tish tish coming from the cellar.   Mark... I see Steve Denison (and all that year leavers '73, Nigel Herriot and Hugh Maisey) are on friendsreunited.com might be able to contact Andrew through there...   (Hugh Maisey who had a sister Tina... whose name spelt backwards was "Yes I am A Nit" - that always appealed to me as an 11 year old in Dorm 1 with Herriot, Maisey, Denison,  Aplin, Dean, Williams.... even when those b@#$@#tards Berridge & Sharrock came through the hatchway from Dorm II after dark !!   As for other uses of the cellar............. how EVER many Custard Creams went missing during the 70's ???   Question:  Who was the vicar of ?St Mary's church? that we always got marched down to in a Sunday parade ?   Another (for Mark)... I remember a hilarious episode during prep one night... Gavin I think, set you 10 lines on "To be a school prefect you have to creep and creep and creep".... towards the end, I recall the message had changed slightly "To be a school prefect you have to creep and creep and creap and creap and crap and crap" - I think that one appealed to my 13 year olds sense of humour...   What weird memories..... keep em coming !!

  15. oooooops. should've been 100 lines......... which gets me wondering.. in these days of PCs and word processors... do people give "100 lines" anymore ?  or have they gone the way of the slide rule and the bok of log tables..... (which reminds me of a story of Tweedie.... OK enough !!!

  16. Can't remember the Vicars name but I can certainly remember his scrawny face and taking confirmation classes with him - the motivation being that once confirmed you could get the church thing over at the 7.30am communion service and have the whole Sunday morning free. Or even better - pretend to have done the 7.30 church thing!
The days of marching down in pairs to St. M's in a long crocodile with boaters on . . . back to W/L for Sunday roast - (always pork) - and then the 2.00pm cross country run on full stomachs and the inevitable chucking up lunch on the Winchester golf course - never made much sense to me.

I see no-one has mentioned the Saturday Morning Treatment - nows theres a skeleton in a cupboard - toothpaste and dubbin have never been the same since.

Sundays werent all bad though - the evening games of 'chase' though the school grounds in the winter or kicking a football around on the quad in the summer evenngs.- and the challenge of the 'duels' in the fives court. I recall once getting thoroughly 'pasted' by a Steven McNally (thwackers as he was known due to his excess bulk) in my first year in defence of the honour om my brothers name - well that was a watse of time! Steven also resides in Oz and I have contacte him a couple of times via email

  17. Wasn't the vicar "Charlie" Wells? Nick-named after the brewery I assume.
    Rog.
