More Latin translation please

I have been asked to get a translation for the following. If you can help please let me know

With regard to Latin translation, I recall that about the time I started at Peter Symonds in 1945 a letter was published in the Hampshire Chronicle which, rumour had it, originated from a PSSW schoolboy. The writer said that he had discovered in his garden a metal vessel with an inscription, which he thought was in Latin and he was asking if anyone could translate it. The inscription read "ITI SAPIS SPOTAN DATI NONE". I do not think it got a response!

regards,

  1. Assuming nobody can remember any Latin from their schooldays, maybe I could fob my client off and just use that instead? It would look great on their crest!

  2. Hi Jim 'und andere'

Well, you can see where my strong point was ... certainly NOT Latin, even though I was in 5.2.Lit !!! ... after a result of 13% for Latin in School Cert was it any wonder my next move was to 5.1.Gen !!! ...

The version of the translation request you quote Jim, was a little different in my year (one ahead of you), it went as follows "ITI SAPIS SPOTANDA TINO NE". ... I feel the translation is pretty well the same though !!! ...

    Keep smiling all ...

  4. Hi Scotty

    Firstly, WELCOME ABOARD ...

I see you are in Oz too ... I am in Perth (well Glen Forrest to be exact) ... where are you , if you don't mind me asking ?

    Re Latin Translation ...

In my day (Sept 1944 to July 1950) it was:

ITI SAPIS SPOTANDA TINO NE ...

But I guess the end result was the same !!!

Do you by any chance have any photos of your days at Peter Pips that you would be happy to share with us all ???

Look forward to your future postings ...

  5. Hi Doug, Thanks for your welcome, the world is getting smaller, arrived in Melbourne 1969 and stayed till 1976 when Mackay beckoned me (sick inlaws actually) and there I lived until my second stab at returement in 2002 when I came up here to Townsville.
Mackay is a nice enough place to live but what on earth does one do in retirement.
