School Band 1948

oThe chap on the far right on the front row is my brother David Cound

I am John Cound 1951-1953 . We moved up to Loughborough in 1953 so I had to leave. We lived at 52 Hatherley Road, nice and close to school. I remember one evening I was practicing football on the playing fields opposite my house which we got to through the allotments opposite Cooksie,s house, when Imet up with one of the Harrison brothers who was prbably 4 or 5 years older than me. He challenged me to try to score a goal from the penalty spot with him in goal. I was a very keen footballer at the time, however the upshot was that I placed right in the corner of the net! Strangly I was alittle embarrassed as he was one of my heros at the time. Does anyone remember Charlie Wayman ,Saints inside right and very prolific goal scorer at the time?

  1. hello John, A great story!  I too remember the Harrison brothers, awesomely clever as I remember, always top at everything, but modest with it. I was at school with your older brother Richard. We went on the outing to London in about 1947 from Western School and the photo shows us outside the Houses of Parliament. Your brother Richard is in the front row third from the left.   regards, jim

  2. Hi Jim and others !!!
The School band, as I remember, was an 'offshoot' of the JTC (Junior Training Corps ... later to be known as the CCF or Combined Cadet Forces) ... PLEASE correct me if I am wrong ... not sure if I remember who was in charge (of the band) in my time (1945 - 1950), but 'CANY' comes to mind, but then again, was it 'TOM' ??? ...
Somewhere, I have a photo of the cadets assembled in Hatherley Road near the entrance to the Armoury (as it was at that time) prior to leaving for camp on Salisbury plain somewhere (Lark Hill comes to mind, but DEFINITELY not certain ... I do remember we won the 'Guard Turn Out' competition against such competition as Magdelen College Oxford and Pete Cox almost feinted)and we all got a 'Stripe' when we resumed at School ...  (our RSM was an ex KRRC's man ... can't remember his name ... SORRY !) ...
I will seek the photo and post it a t a later date ...
    Keep smiling people ...

All the best from Perth Western Australia ...

  3. That was a cunning photo link there, Jim (message no 2 above)! I wandered round the Western School site for 10 minutes , thinking something very strange had happened to the PS site, before realizing I'd slipped through the space-time continuum!
